Our NextGen Empowered by Cashback for Communities Phase 7: We Choose Hope

The numbers of young Black males on the verge of the criminal justice system are growing. Not because of who they are, but because of what they face. Many come from migrant, refugee and asylum-seeking families — families who have survived unimaginable things and are doing their absolute best in systems that were never designed to support them.

These young people are not choosing harm. They are being chosen — targeted and groomed by those who exploit vulnerability for profit. Once entangled, the criminal justice system moves in and the young person carries the weight of consequences while those who recruited them walk free.

This is the reality. And it calls for a response that is early, culturally rooted, and deeply human.

We Are Building Because Our Young People Matter

We know that you cannot support a young person in isolation. Behind every young man trying to find his way is a parent often a mother carrying stress, fear and exhaustion that nobody sees. Our project takes a holistic approach. Alongside our work with young people, we will run a peer-led parent support group — a safe, community-based space where parents can share experiences, learn practical strategies, reduce isolation and strengthen their relationships with their children

At Passion4Fusion, we have spent years building trust with multi-ethnic communities in Edinburgh and the Lothians. We know that culturally responsive practice is not a nice-to-have, it is the difference between a young person walking through the door or not. It is the difference between a parent feeling judged or feeling held.

This project is an extension of that trust. It is built on the belief that every young person no matter their background, their postcode or their past deserves someone in their corner.

“When young people have trusted adults, meaningful activities and a community that believes in them the alternatives to harmful pathways become real.”

Kicking Barriers Out Of The Game: Our Girls’ Football Event That’s Changing the Game

Last summer, we held our first girls’ football taster session. We wanted to test the waters and open the doors to a new project that created a supportive space for the girls in our youth community, while continuing to diversify how we deliver sport at P4F. We saw the need for this to happen and knew there were many girls with a passion and curiosity for football. What started as a taster session quickly grew into consistent weekly training. Whether playing as a girls’ group or alongside the boys, female football truly took off at Passion4Fusion.

The girls on the team come willing and ready every week, and it was clear from the very first session that this would manifest into something special. What was once a “trial” quickly became a commitment and highlighted a gap that needed to be filled immediately.

On 31st January, we are hosting our first female football festival at the Oriam. Being able to host such an event in a highly influential building used by the Scottish Football Association as a training facility is incredibly special. With the Hearts Women’s team hosting their home games at the Oriam, the venue represents elite talent and powerful visibility for girls in football across the country. This makes it the perfect place to bring our girls together for a night that celebrates women in sport, allows teams to showcase their skills, encourages friendly competition, and most importantly, creates an enjoyable and memorable experience.

Our Aim Is To Bringing the Community Together with Our Girls’ Football Event in Action

We want this event to help pave the way for the future. At P4F, we want All Sports to inspire our community and set the tone for what is to come for our talented youth members. The girls continue to work hard at every training session in anticipation of this special day, and we are extremely optimistic that this festival at the Oriam is just the beginning
